How to get started in Affiliate Marketing

If you’ve ever searched for ways to make money online, chances are you’ve stumbled into affiliate marketing, and maybe wondered if it’s legit, or just another shiny thing.

On the surface, it sounds simple: promote a link, earn a commission. But in truth, affiliate marketing is just one galaxy in the vast universe of online income, and without a map, it’s easy to drift aimlessly.

It’s a proven model. But with so many approaches, authority sites, funnels, blogs, reviews, YouTube, social media, it can feel more like a choose-your-own-adventure book… with no instructions.

So hopefully I can give you the map, the compass, and the flashlight, so you can stop guessing and start building.

You’ve probably heard the promises —

“Push-button riches!”
“Make money while you sleep!”
“Just copy and paste your way to success!”

But the reality is…
Affiliate marketing can be powerful, but it’s not magic. It’s a system. And like any system, it works best when:

  • You understand the parts,
  • You have the right tools,
  • And you’re willing to put in some real effort (yes, actual effort — not just clicking shiny buttons).

🌀 Choose Your Path And Know What It Will Cost You

Before we jump into the steps, let’s clear something up…

There’s more than one way to do affiliate marketing, and that’s both exciting and overwhelming.
Here are a few of the most common paths:

  • 🧱 Authority Website – Build helpful, niche-focused content over time to rank on search engines
  • 🛍️ Product Review Site – Compare and promote related products with SEO or ad traffic
  • 📺 YouTube Channel – Create videos that recommend, demonstrate, or educate around affiliate products
  • 📧 Email Funnel – Build a list and market via email with bridge pages and lead magnets
  • 🔗 Link Drop + Paid Ads – Direct response campaigns (often more expensive but faster feedback)
  • 📣 Social Media Marketing – Leverage platforms like TikTok, Facebook, or Instagram to grow an audience

Here’s the thing:
If you don’t spend money, you’ll spend time.
If you want to go faster, you’ll need to spend money.
And if you want to build something long-term… you’ll spend both.

So be honest with yourself.
How much time do you really have?
How much money can you invest (without panic)?
And what’s your tolerance for learning new stuff?

Pick a path that matches your strengths now. You can always evolve later.

✅ Step 1: Understand What You’re Actually Doing

You’re not just “posting links”, you’re solving a problem for a specific person.

That means:

  • Knowing who you want to help (your niche),
  • Finding what they already want (the offer),
  • And choosing how you’ll reach them (your traffic source).

This is your foundation. Get this right, and everything else becomes easier.

🔍 Step 2: Pick a Platform (Not All at Once!)

You don’t need 12 social media accounts. You don’t need a blog and a YouTube channel and a podcast and

You need one home base to start. Something like:

Then choose one method of getting traffic — solo ads, safelists, TikTok, YouTube, blogging, whatever fits your strengths.

Start where you’re strongest. Stick with it long enough to get real data.

🧰 Step 3: Use the Right Tools (Without Overwhelm)

You’ll hear people throw around a million tool names. Don’t get lost. Start with the basics:

  • Email list builder (You need this. LeadsLeap or Systeme.io are great to begin.)
  • Link tracker (To know what’s working.)
  • Backup system (Seriously, protect your hard work.)

📚 Step 4: Learn While Doing (Not Just Consuming)

Courses are great, but only if you implement as you learn.

Treat this like learning a musical instrument. You can watch videos all day, but if you don’t pick up the guitar, you’re not going to play a song.

At TAD, we’re big fans of the “Learn → Do → Reflect” loop:

  1. Learn a new concept.
  2. Implement it immediately.
  3. Reflect on the results and adjust.

💡 Step 5: Focus on One Funnel, One Offer, One Traffic Source

Repeat after me:

“I will not try to build 5 businesses at once.”

Pick one offer.
Build one funnel.
Drive one traffic source to it until you get traction.

When you get your first opt-in or first sale, it’s a sign you’re on the right track. Then scale, tweak, or replicate.
